Google's latest Gmail tweaks bring contact info to search results, enhanced Circle integration
By any means, this is certainly far from being one of the biggest changes Gmail's ever seen -- still, it's one that's likely to make a few tasks a wee bit easier for you. Inside the recent tweaks, Google added a new quick access trait that makes contact details -- such as phone numbers -- show up automatically in search results within your cherished G inbox. Additionally, the Android-maker has improved the Google+ integration (again), now allowing folks to narrow down conversations from specific Circles in the search box (you know, something like Circle: Awesome Engadget editors). Google says the changes will be rolling out over the course of the day, but in the meantime, you could always check out what exactly happens behind Gmail's closed doors. Controlling a Robot With Your Mind
Brain implants, a robotic arm, thought control ? it sounds far out. But in Brown University?s BrainGate experiment, the combination worked. Scientists helped stroke survivor Cathy Hutchinson train her mind, a computer, and a robotic arm to work together to perform a simple task her own body hasn?t been capable of since 1996: raising a cup of coffee to her mouth, and drinking it.

Google Docs Research sidebar looks up terms, adds images, quotes, and citations
Google Docs has a lot going for it as an office or writing tool, and we imagine the Research sidebar, which appears to have recently launched on the suite, will help bolster its popularity. After selecting Tools > Research or using a shortcut, Docs will bring up a sidebar, letting you either type in a term or right-click one in the document to research it. It's a bit more than a glorified search bar, though. Snippets of the web results can be added to the document itself, images can be dragged and dropped, and the tool will automatically generate citations to credit whatever you've used. You can even limit the image search to Creative Commons-licensed free results. In the short term, this will probably lead to some terrible grade-school... Continue reading…

Lenovo announces ThinkPad X1 Carbon, calls it the world's lightest 14-inch ultrabook (hands-on)
Lenovo unveiled a blitz of refreshed ThinkPad laptops today, each sporting a redesigned keyboard and Intel Ivy Bridge chips, but it had one surprise in store: the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. As you'd guess, the carbon stands for carbon fiber, that exceptionally desirable material that manages to simultaneously be thin, light, strong, and stiff, and thanks to Lenovo's carbon fiber chassis, the company's crafted a 14-inch laptop that weighs just three pounds and is 18 millimeters thick at its thickest point. Despite all that, it's got a surprisingly deep backlit ThinkPad keyboard, and both a smooth trackpad and an eraserhead pointer with real mouse buttons for each. There's a pair of full-size USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, a Mini DisplayPort socket, a... Continue reading…

This 4-kilobyte demo squeezes a universe of fractals into the size of a Word document
It's 2012 and it's safe to say that a lot of us are done being impressed by big-budget Hollywood CG. But jaw-dropping technical wizardry is still alive and well in the demoscene, where rather than vying for a spot on the next Pixar film, highly skilled coders are creating real-time audiovisual demonstrations that compile snugly into 4-kilobyte executables. "Hartverdrahtet" (above) is the worthy winner of Assembly 2012's 4k demo competition, rendering a procedurally-generated universe of fractal landscapes using a file the size of your average Word document. Demosceners often build custom software to make their productions as economical as possible. The author, Demoscene Passivist, says the demo took around two months to complete and... Continue reading…

Watch this: 'Toy Story 2' almost disappeared thanks to a bad backup
The Toy Story films are some of the most cherished animated movies ever made, but the second part of the trilogy almost disappeared for good — and it was all because of a bad backup. According to Pixar's Oren Jacob and Galyn Susman, during development someone ran the rm* command on the drive where all of the Toy Story 2's files were being stored, essentially erasing about a year's worth a work in 20 seconds. Even worse, the team soon realized that the backup files they had made were actually bad, leaving them with no copies whatsoever. Or so it seemed. Luckily, Susman had a copy of the film on her computer at home, which ultimately saved the day. Though the it's a charming tale — and one that's at least a few years old — it still... Thinner 15-Inch MacBook Pro Coming with Retina Display and USB 3.0?
Following the appearance of a benchmark potentially signaling a near-term launch for Apple's much-rumored thinner MacBook Pro, 9to5Mac reports that it has received specific information on the new 15-inch MacBook Pro's design from a source who has handled prototype casings and other components.
Mockup of thinner 15-inch MacBook Pro design (left) compared to current design (right) The most obvious change for the new machine is its design, and while the report's source indicates that it will be considerably thinner than the existing MacBook Pro due to the removal of the optical drive, it will look essentially like a thinner version of the current MacBook Pro rather than adopting the tapered design of the MacBook Air as had been rumored previously. While many have speculated that the new 15-inch MacBook Pro will pickup the design from the late-2010/mid-2011 MacBook Air, sources familiar with the prototype units say that this is untrue. Instead, the new 15-inch MacBook Pro is described as being an ultra-thin version of the current MacBook Pro. Basically, the prototype design is a thinner, yet more robust, version of the late-2008 design. It has no tapering like the MacBook Airs. The casing of the forthcoming MacBook Pro reportedly includes ports for the MagSafe power connector, two USB ports, and audio in/out jacks along the left side, with a battery level indicator also included along the same side. The right side is said to offer a pair of Thunderbolt ports, another USB port, an SD card slot, and a Kensington lock slot.
Mockup of port layout on thinner 15-inch MacBook Pro The machines are said to lack a dedicated Ethernet port, with users apparently needing to rely on the USB-to-Ethernet dongle introduced with the original MacBook Air if they wish to use a wired connection. Given its height, the Ethernet port is one of the primary features limiting how thin the MacBook Pro can be, and it appears that Apple may simply have removed the port entirely in order to achieve the thin design it desired. The new MacBook Pro may also forgo FireWire connectivity, although the report appears unsure on that point.
In line with previous rumors, the machine is said to include a "Retina" display, a development that has been rumored for some time and for which evidence has been showing up in builds of OS X Lion and Mountain Lion. According to the report's source, OS X will simply offer a set of resolution quality options for the new machine ("such as big, small, or optimal") to allow users taking advantage of this new "HiDPI" support to select their desired combination of sharpness and resolution.
The report indicates that the USB ports on the new MacBook Pro will support USB 3.0, a feature some had questioned whether Apple would adopt given the move to Thunderbolt connectivity. But last September it was reported that Apple was still considering support USB 3.0 alongside Thunderbolt, and that appears to be the route the company has taken as Thunderbolt peripherals have been rather slow to roll out in many cases. A fresh report from Digitimes also claims that Genesys Logic has won a contract to supply USB 3.0 chips for a forthcoming MacBook Air revision, and it seems likely that such compatibility would also be coming to the MacBook Pro.
A launch timeframe for the new MacBook Pro remains unknown, with the company expected to be able to introduce updated machines any time now as Intel's Ivy Bridge production ramps up. With Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference just four weeks away, it is possible the company could use that event for a major product introduction, although Apple typically limits its hardware announcements at the event in order to focus on iOS and OS X discussion Digitimes claims that Apple's MacBook suppliers will begin increasing their shipments in June with production peaking in July, suggesting that Apple may indeed be targeting a major push for June.

Switched On: And smartplayers for all
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology. A few weeks ago, Switched On noted the challenges that even wildly popular, highly penetrated devices such as MP3 players and portable GPS devices have faced in the era of the converged device. Some of these devices, such as digital cameras, still hold on because of genuine advantages such as better image quality or optical zoom. For others devices, though, such as MP3 players and portable GPS devices, the grim news is that one of the main reasons consumers use them is to save smartphone battery life.
